This entry is part 8 of 17 in the series Sex With My Father-in-Law: The DIL and the Cuckold Husband

Rohan had left after a hurried lunch and a promise to be home before dark. Simran washed two cups and did not return them to the shelf. She made coffee the way Debashish drank tea: strong, no performance.

She stood for a moment in the hall with both cups.

Then she walked to the home office.

The door was open.

The room was larger than she had let herself see from the doorway on other days. A wide desk. Two screens. A wall of files. A dark sofa that looked like it had held late nights. In the far corner, a full gym: heavy weights, a bench, a bar that could take more iron than most men would lift for show. The air smelled of paper, steel, and a clean, dry soap.

A person could live in this room for a month and need nothing but a bathroom.

It was a man’s room. Not messy. Not decorated to please a guest. Everything had a job. The chairs were strong. The light was honest. Even the silence had shoulders.

Debashish looked up.

For one second he was only stunned. A woman in the doorway. Two cups. The shape of an old habit that had died in this room years ago and had not been invited back.

He stood.

“You didn’t have to,” he said.

“I made two.” She set one cup on a clear corner of the desk, away from the papers. “If you are in the middle of something, I can leave it and go.”

“Sit,” he said.

She sat on the edge of the sofa. The leather was warm from the afternoon. He looked at the cup as if it were a sentence he had not planned to read. Then he wrapped his big hand around it and drank.

He did not say first woman since my wife. He did not need to. The pause said it. The way he moved a second coaster into place, like a ritual waking up.

Simran’s eyes, out of work habit, slid to the open screen.

Columns. Margins. A tax line highlighted in yellow. She had been a senior accountant before the design years, before Bangalore made her wear two hats in small companies that could not afford two people. Numbers still spoke to her faster than people.

She frowned.

“What?” he asked.

“That margin,” she said, then stopped. “Sorry. I looked.”

“Look.”

She came to the desk. She did not touch his chair. She pointed.

“This cost is entered as a local rate. If the shipment crossed the state line, the tax slab is different. You are paying as if it stayed inside one border. The difference is not huge on one row. On twelve months it is a hole.”

Debashish leaned in. His shoulder almost reached her hair. He smelled of soap and coffee. He read the line twice.

Then he picked up the phone.

“Rajat. Open the west ledger. Row forty-one to sixty. The local tax code is wrong on interstate loads. No, not tomorrow. Now. Recalculate the last four quarters. I want the corrected figure before six. If accounts argue, tell them the instruction came from me.”

He listened for three seconds.

“Do it.”

He put the phone down.

The room felt charged, as if a large animal had moved and then sat again.

“You saw that in a glance,” he said.

“I used to eat glances like that for lunch,” Simran said. “Now I fold scarves.”

His mouth almost smiled.

They talked business because the door was already open.

He answered her questions without making them small. Warehouses. Contracts. A fleet that was not a hobby. Partners who were late and partners who were afraid of him for the right reasons. Simran felt the size of it settle in her stomach. This was not a “simple” shop. This was a self-made empire, built by a man who had stayed in one city and lifted it with his own back.

“I thought you had a modest company,” she said.

“I have a modest house style,” he said. “The company is not modest.”

“You live so simply. Anyone who only sees the tea and the quiet rooms would never understand the rest.”

He looked at the weights in the corner.

“After she died, people waited for a second wedding. I waited for work to get heavy enough to fill the rooms. It did. I did not remarry. Not because I made a speech about it. Because an empire eats hours, and I let it.”

Simran turned the cup in her hands.

“I am bored,” she said. The truth came out clean. “Without my job I feel like a nice object in a nice house. Rohan is busy becoming new. You are busy staying large. I walk.”

Debashish studied her. Not as a daughter-in-law. As a mind that had just saved him money.

“Boredom is a warning light,” he said. “Do not decorate it.”

He finished the coffee.

“Come,” he said. “I owe you a thanks that is not another ledger.”

The black SUV was cool inside before the city heat could touch her.

“Stay,” he said, when they parked near a small ice cream parlour with a faded board and a long line. “The air will hold. I will bring it.”

“I can come.”

“You can. You will not.” He said it without drama. “Tell me the flavour.”

“Coffee. If they have it. If not, plain.”

He went.

She watched him through the windscreen. Bald head above the crowd. Broad back. People made space without being asked. He did not check his phone in the line. He did not look like a multi-millionaire. He looked like a man buying ice cream. That was the strange part. The power and the simplicity sitting in the same body.

He came back with two cups and paper napkins. He handed hers in first, then closed the door, then sat.

The car stayed parked under a thin tree. The engine hummed just enough to keep the air cold.

Simran tasted the coffee ice cream and closed her eyes.

“This is better than my coffee,” she said.

“Your coffee started a tax correction. This is only sugar.”

She laughed. He let out a low sound that was almost a laugh. It changed his whole face for a second, then the calm returned.

They sat there like two people who had found a bench in a city that did not know their names.

“I respect the way you work,” she said. Easy words. Heavy meaning. “You do not perform. You just do the large thing until it is done.”

“And I respect a person who can see a hole in a page and not use it to show off,” he said. “You pointed. You sat down. That is rare.”

Friendship, real and deep, settled between the two cups.

Simran licked the spoon and looked at the man who had once been only a closed door and a short phone call. She liked his mind. She liked his dry lines. She liked that he had made her wait in the cool car as if her comfort were a fact, not a favour.

She respected him immensely.

The danger was no longer only his height or his hands.

The danger was this: she felt awake.

Rohan’s evening was still coming. The guest room was still upstairs. The marriage was still the marriage.

But in the parked car, with ice cream melting at the same slow speed, Simran thought, very clearly:

I will remember this afternoon.

Debashish started the car.

“Home,” he said.

She nodded.

Neither of them said that home now had a new room in it.

The office with two cups.
